Conference: Aspects of Family Law in the Ancient World

The Department of Greek and Latin at University College London (UCL) is planning to host an international conference on 22-24 April 2015 on aspects of family law in the Ancient World. We are using the term ‘family law’ as a convenient label for the range of legislation by which states seek to regulate the behaviour of ‘families’ and their members, and to define the boundaries between private and public responsibility for such matters. We are operating with a broad conception of the Ancient World, embracing a range of Mediterranean and Near and Middle Eastern cultures from the earliest times to late antiquity (including Egyptian, Old and Neo-Assyrian, New Babylonian, Persian, Ugarit, Alalakh, Greek and Roman).
Confirmed speakers include: Prof. Sophie Démare-Lafont (Paris), Prof. Edward Harris (Durham), Prof. Alberto Maffi (Milan), Prof. Paul Mitchell (UCL), Prof. Karen Radner (UCL), Prof. Lene Rubinstein (RHUL), and Prof. Jakub Urbanik (Warsaw).
Papers (in English, French, German or Italian) will be 20 minutes long, with 10 minutes for discussion. They will cover the four broad themes outlined below.
Rights and obligations of kinship: legal obligations of parents (including ‘social parents’ such as guardians or stepparents) on the care and maintenance of children; legal obligations of children to care for elderly parents; extent of the state’s responsibility for the care and protection of vulnerable family members (e.g. widows, orphans, and the elderly); legal obligations for burial and commemorative rites.
Marriage/divorce/adultery: eligibility for marriage; definitions of incest; procedures for a legally valid marriage; laws on dowry and marital property; definitions and legal consequences of adultery; attitudes to monogamy and polygamy, and to concubinage and other informal relationships; legal provision and procedures for divorce.
Bastardy: distinctions between ‘legitimacy’ and ‘illegitimacy’ (bastardy); legal means of controlling or preventing illegitimate births (such as abortion or infanticide); ‘proof’ of legitimacy in cases of dispute; legitimation of children who were born illegitimate; legal relationship (including inheritance rights) between illegitimate children and their parents and other members of the birth family; effect of bastardy on civic status (citizenship, right to marry, right to own property, etc.).
Property and inheritance: definitions of individual versus family property; types of property that could be inherited; entitlement to own and inherit property (including women’s rights); importance of patrilineal succession and male precedence; testamentary freedom; adoption of an heir.

DM Getzel Cohen

Getzel Cohen, professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Cincinnati, passed away on Friday, February 13, 2015, after a severe illness. He will be sorely missed.
Getzel joined the department of Classics in 1970. He taught ancient and especially Greek history to more than a generation of students. He specialized in the Hellenistic settlements after the conquest of the East by Alexander the Great. He published his major work on this in three volumes between 1995 and 2013 - a lifetime achievement (the second volume covers Egypt). Early in his career he participated in a summer school under the auspices of the American Society of Papyrologists, and he worked up two Oxyrhynchus papyri for publication (XLI 2973 and 2979). He later collaborated with colleagues in Leuven and Warsaw on A Judean-Syrian-Egyptian Conflict of 103-101 B.C. (Brussels 1989).
In 2001 Getzel created the Tytus Visiting Scholars program, which he directed from its inception. About 175 Tytus scholars from around the world, including several papyrologists, have experienced his hospitality in Cincinnati. His interest in other people and his enthusiasm will long be remembered by me, his other colleagues, his students, the Tytus fellows, and everyone he came into contact with.

Y. Broux, Double Names and Elite Strategy in Roman Egypt

Double Names and Elite Strategy in Roman Egypt
Peeters, Leuven
Studia Hellenistica, 54
Authors:  Broux Y.
Year: 2015
ISBN: 978-90-429-3125-1
Pages: VIII-317 p.
Price: 94 EUR
Summary:

In this detailed study of double names in Egypt, Yanne Broux explores how the age-old tradition of polyonymy flourished under Roman rule. While in the Ptolemaic period double names were mainly bilingual and were thus connected to the concept of ethnicity, they underwent a significant change starting around the middle of the first century AD and culminating in the third. Broux argues that this shift from Ptolemaic Greek-Egyptian to Roman Greek-Greek double names was the outcome of two structures introduced by the Romans: the strict social hierarchy on the one hand, and the municipalization of the metropoleis, which led to the rise of the local elite, on the other. This resulted in a strong emphasis on Greek identity and descent, and double names lent themselves exceptionally well for this purpose. They bring to the fore the importance that the local elite attached to Greek identity and descent, and, perhaps as a wink to the (forbidden?) tria nomina, provided a means to distinguish their prominent bearers from the rest of the Egyptian population.

P.J. Parsons, Maeheler, H., Maltomini, F., The Vienna Epigrams Papyrus (G 40611) CPR XXXIII

Aims and Scope

This papyrus (3rd century BC) contains c. 200 incipits (first lines) of Greek epigrams with a numeral at the end of each line that gives the number of lines of the complete epigram; most of them had 4 lines. Of these, only one has been ascribed to a known poet (Asklepiades), but it is by no means clear that all of them were his. Their publication, greatly aided by multispectral photography, is a very welcome addition to Hellenistic poetry.

Over 20 scholars have participated in this edition and there is a valuable appendix : "Games competitors and performers in Roman Egypt" by S. Remijsen pp. 190-206. This is a useful idea, because a good portion of the papyri presented here were the subject of a meeting and seminar at the British Academy in June 2012, which focused on papyri that were relevant to games and performances. (This reviewer was present.) Some of the papyri here are of extraordinary interest far beyond the world of sport and festival in antiquity, and will be highlighted.

In this volume, AnneMarie Luijendijk analyzes a previously unknown text preserved in a fifth- or sixth-century Coptic miniature codex, entitled The Gospel of the Lots of Mary , and places it within the context of practices of and debates about divination in the ancient Mediterranean world. This is the first critical edition and translation of this new text; it is also a project about religious authority and practices.
In the first part of the book, the author investigates the codex, taking into account both its weaving together of biblical allusions and traditional divinatory phrases, its material format as miniature codex with imprints of its use, and mode of operation. The second part consists of the edition of this text, an English translation, and an elaborate textual commentary.
AnneMarie Luijendijk participates in conversations about lived religion and privileged knowledge of the divine or the future. Sortilege—the practice of casting lots to obtain an answer—was widespread in antiquity; it was a method applied in decision-making on all levels of ancient society. As a religious practice, lot divination was also highly contested, as access to these practices and thus to the divine meant control of powers, religiously and socially. The text, replete with biblical phrases but fundamentally materialistic in worldview, disrupts our concepts of what is religious in the ancient world. Luijendijk thus contributes to discussions in the study of religion that question the categories of religion and magic. She also contributes to scholarship on the production and use of books, especially miniature codices.

Online Seminar, Uni-Heidelberg: "Translating Ancient Letters - Übersetzungen antiker Briefe"

Sommersemester 2015.  Online Seminar
"Translating Ancient Letters - Übersetzungen antiker Briefe"
Rodney Ast (University of Heidelberg) and Holger Essler (University of Würzburg), in cooperation with Heidelberg's Center for Cultural Heritage, are offering in Summer Semester 2015 an online seminar on ancient Greek letters for undergraduate and early graduate students. Over 8000 private, business, and official Greek letters written between ca. 300 BCE and 700 CE survive on papyri and ostraca from Egypt. This unique source material provides important insight into a wide range of topics related to ancient studies, including social history, literacy, administrative practice, linguistics, etc. Aim of the seminar is to explore some of these themes through the close reading and translation of a selection of Greek letters, with particular attention paid to letters as ancient artifacts and to their socio-cultural context.
The course is free of charge and will take place Thursdays, 16:15 - 17:45, Central European Time. The first meeting will be April 16 and the last July 16. The language of instruction is English, and good knowledge of Greek is required. Participants should already have a Skype account set up by the first session. Certificates will be issued upon successful completion of the class.
Those interested in taking part should send a brief letter of application and a CV to Michaela Böttner, boettner@uni-heidelberg.de, by Saturday, *February 28, 2015*. Questions about the course can be directed to Rodney Ast (ast@uni-heidelberg.de ) and/or Holger Essler (holger.essler@uni-wuerzburg.de ). The number of participants will be kept to a maximum of 12.

NORTH AMERICAN PAPYROLOGY SEMINAR I
ANN ARBOR, MI
MAY 15-17, 2015
Sponsored by the American Society of Papyrologists
Sessions
We invite active scholars and students in all fields of papyrology to present works-inprogress to colleagues, learn about large projects in the field, and enjoy a weekend focused on scholarship. All participants must be active (paid) members of the American Society of Papyrologists.
There will be two types of sessions:
1. Presentations on large projects in papyrology that benefit the whole field (digitization
projects, APIS, etc.) (max. 1 hour including questions and discussion)
2. Presentations of individual projects (max. 30 minutes including discussion)
Basic projection equipment will be available for all presentations. Members of the Society
may also attend without presenting, and should still fill out the form below.
Accommodations
All participants will arrange their own accommodations. A list of Ann Arbor hotels will be
provided well in advance of the seminar. Ann Arbor is served by Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and shuttles run regularly between the airport and Ann Arbor.

University of Michigan Papyrology Collection
Please note that the University of Michigan papyrus collection, and the papyrology room, will not be available during the seminar. Those who wish to use the collection during their stay in Ann Arbor should arrange to do so before or after the weekend seminar.
